Are You Trusting in God?
I. Introduction
A. When we read of Moses and the Israelites in the books of Exodus,
Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy, we are often taken by the lack of
trust of the Israelites
B. God had delivered them numerous times, and yet they still would doubt
and not trust in Him!
C. Or, perhaps, we look at Jesus the Christ in the Gospels, and we see Him
performing numerous miracles and wonders and signs and yet people would
not believe, nor trust, in Him!
D. We look back with hindsight at these people and wonder how they could not
trust in God when all of this evidence is furnished
E. Yet we in our own lives, me included, also display that lack of trust in
many ways!
F. Do you trust God in every aspect of your life? Do you trust that He will
deliver you, not just to Heaven, but in all things?
G. Let us examine how we ought to trust in God this morning
II. Commandments of Trust
A. Matthew 6:25-34, 1 Timothy 6:17-19
1. We are to trust God that He shall take care of us
2. This is not easy to do
3. Bills add up; money seems to be tight
4. Are we praying to God for assistance?
5. I can vouch for God here: I have had many a trouble financially, and
when I trusted in Him, they were lightened
6. We must trust that God will deliver us
B. Hebrews 12:1-8
1. God will afflict us so that we may grow
2. Do we trust in God? Do we trust Him when we need Him most?
3. When we are afflicted, do we turn to Him?
C. 1 Thessalonians 5:18
1. Many turn to God when life is bad, but do you thank God and trust in
Him when life is good??
D. Romans 1:16
1. Do we have trust in the power of the Gospel of God, or do we think
that we ourselves have the power?
2. Do we let God work to convert souls, or do we try to take over?
III. Men who Trusted in God
A. More so than commandments, examples of men who trust are abundant
B. Job
1. He was given many great things by God, and watched them all be taken
away (Job 1-2)
2. Yet he never, ever cursed God, and lay his trust with Him
3. Job's affliction was lifted, and God rewarded him greatly
(Job 42:10-17)
C. Hezekiah
1. 2 Kings 19: the Assyrians are besieging Jerusalem, and all hope of
safety is lost
2. Hezekiah, king, turns to God (verses 14-19)
3. Since he trusted in God, God delivered Jerusalem by smiting the
Assyrians in their sleep (verse 35)
D. Hebrews 11
1. The Hebrew writer discusses all of those great men of faith, and how
they trusted in God
2. verse 7: Noah, although there was no rain, trusted in God and built
the Ark
3. verse 8-19: Abraham, by leaving his country and following God, and as
willing to sacrifice his only son, was found righteous since he
demonstrated his trust in God
4. Moses, Samuel, David, and many others won favor with God only by
trusting in Him
IV. Men Whose Trust was Lacking
A. Balaam
1. Numbers 22: Balaam was told by God to not curse the Israelites
a. did not trust the order
b. attempted to do so, but was prevented
B. Solomon
1. 1 Kings 11: despite having been given all wisdom by God, Solomon takes
many wives, and begins to worship their idols
2. He no longer trusted in God, and because of it, the kingdom of Israel
was to be divided (verse 11)
C. The Kings of Israel
1. 1-2 Kings: none trusted in the Lord, and because of it, they were
taken away into permanent exile by the Assyrians
D. Judah
1. Certain kings of Judah also did not trust in the Lord; and since the
Jews there had not let the land lay fallow every seven years for 490
years, God exiled them for seventy years, one for every violation
V. Conclusion
A. We have seen men who have trusted God and their reward along with men
who did not trust God, along with the consequences
B. Jesus spoke rightly in Matthew 13:12
C. We must have trust in God if we shall be found righteous in His sight!
D. If you have not yet put your full trust in the Lord and in His Son Jesus
Christ for your life and salvation, there is no better time than now
